A San Diego man has been sentenced to a life term for sexually abusing multiple young relatives. Joaquin Ruiz, 45, will serve 102 years to life following his conviction on 18 counts of sex abuse against children, including forcible lewd acts and possession of child sexual abuse material, as reported by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.
Ruiz's victims ranged in age from 5 to 16, and the prosecution revealed sickening details, including video footage from hidden cameras Ruiz placed in his home's bathrooms. These cases unfolded over several years, with the initial disclosures by victims being met with disbelief by their own family members, a factor that allowed the abuse to continue. As the details emerged, what followed was a chilling testimonial to the deceptive facade Ruiz had maintained, with the District Attorney labeling him a "family predator."
"Predators who steal the innocence of a child, creating a lifetime of trauma, have no place in our society," District Attorney Summer Stephan stated, per the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. She continued, emphasizing the message that the sentence sends to sexual abusers: "You will be held to account, and you will not hide in the shadows, no matter what your affiliations are."
