Tragedy struck in downtown San José earlier this week when a 15-year-old high school student was the victim of a kidnapping and sexual assault. The San José Police Department responded to the crime rapidly, leading to the arrest of 51-year-old Marlo Porter, a registered sex offender. According to a statement released by the SJPD, the incident was first reported on Wednesday, with the attack occurring en route to school in the vicinity of South 3rd Street and East San Fernando Street.
Upon arrival at school, the survivor courageously came forward, and patrol officers and analysts swiftly worked to track down the suspect. Leveraging the FUSUS system and the department's Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system, law enforcement was able to quickly identify a suspect vehicle. This rapid collaboration was critical in the prompt apprehension of the suspect, as noted in a Hoodline report detailing the police department's high-tech approach to the investigation.
The SJPD's efforts culminated in a high-risk vehicle stop near Porter's South San José residence. With assistance from the department's Air 3 helicopter, ground officers located and arrested Porter without incident.
Acknowledging the gravity of the crime and the impact on the community, San José Mayor Matt Mahan vowed to ensure it would not be repeated. "What happened to this child is every kid's and every parent's worst nightmare," Mayor Mahan told the SJPD. "This isn't the first time this suspect has harmed a child, but I will do everything in my power to make sure it's the last."
