A South Austin bike ride ended in tragedy after a collision with a motorcycle at a busy neighborhood intersection late last month. The crash happened Dec. 23 at South 1st Street and West Slaughter Lane. The cyclist, 58-year-old Jeffrey House, was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and died on Jan. 3. The motorcycle driver was also hospitalized, according to police.
According to CBS Austin, Austin police say House was struck by a motorcycle at the intersection, and both he and the rider were taken to a hospital. The outlet reports House died Jan. 3. Investigators have not announced any charges or released additional details about what led to the collision. CBS Austin also noted that the crash is being counted among Austin's traffic fatalities for 2025.
Where the crash happened
The collision occurred where South 1st meets West Slaughter, a corridor that saw multiple serious incidents during the holiday period, according to Austin Police Department traffic notices. The department publishes individual “Traffic Fatality” posts that include preliminary case details and a contact number for its Vehicular Homicide Unit. Recent Austin Police Department postings show other fatal incidents on nearby Slaughter Lane in late December.
City safety efforts remain in focus
City leaders continue to lean on Vision Zero and targeted intersection upgrades as part of a long-term effort to cut down on traffic deaths, even as fatal crashes keep piling up, especially on state-managed roads. A recent review of Austin’s Vision Zero work highlighted investments in intersections, crossings, and bicycle facilities, while noting that the overall number of fatalities has remained stubbornly high. Community Impact covered the Vision Zero update and its findings.
The investigation into House’s death is ongoing. APD fatality notices say anyone with information can contact the Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111 or submit tips through Capital Area Crime Stoppers. Officials say updates will be released as more details are confirmed. The Austin Police Department has posted preliminary case notices for late-December crashes along Slaughter Lane.
