Drivers traveling through Franklin County near St. Clair should note that the eastbound Interstate 44 rest area has been closed. The closure began Tuesday and will continue through January 23 as MoDOT restripes the area and prepares to demolish the existing restroom building as part of a planned upgrade.
While construction is underway, the rest area is not completely closed. Aside from a temporary full closure earlier this week, the site remains open with temporary restroom facilities in place. Traffic is being redirected to the opposite side of the parking lot, and drivers are advised to follow posted signs. According to MoDOT, the direction of angled parking spaces has also been adjusted to improve safety.
Additional short-term closures may occur as construction continues. MoDOT plans to rebuild the restroom facility, and all work is weather permitting. Drivers are encouraged to monitor MoDOT updates for the latest information.
