Tennessee lawmakers and the local Venezuelan community have responded to a U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. WSMV reported that the action comes after months of increased tensions and a U.S. government push against the South American nation.
Senator Marsha Blackburn expressed support for the administration’s actions, while Senator Bill Hagerty said Maduro should be held accountable. Rep. Tim Burchett thanked Trump and officials involved in the operation. Other Tennessee leaders, including Hagerty and Rep. David Kustoff, described the strike as necessary, according to FOX17.
Not all reactions supported the operation. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized President Trump, pointing to his recent pardon of a known trafficker and questioning the motives behind the military action.
In Nashville, members of the Venezuelan community, including Fidel Vasquez of the Caracasville food truck, expressed relief following the events. In an interview with The Tennessean, Vasquez said the developments were positive and noted that establishing a stable democracy in Venezuela will take time. These reactions come as the Venezuelan population in the U.S. continues to grow, according to a recent Pew Research Center study.
