A somber start to the New Year as one individual lost their life and several were injured in an early morning fire in Manchester, New Hampshire. The blaze, according to NBC Boston, broke out at the Executive Manor Apartments on Union Street shortly after the New Year's ball drop, around 12:36 a.m.
Firefighters faced a daunting scene with people trapped on balconies and leaning desperately out of windows. One person took a perilous leap from a second-floor balcony to escape the inferno, a decision born of pure survival instinct. As reported by Boston 25 News, a dramatic rescue unfolded for a child trapped in a fourth-floor bedroom, a testament to the swiftness and bravery of the responding fire crews.
Despite the heroic efforts, the tight-knit community suffered loss and disruption: one casualty, one critically wounded, and seven others treated for injuries. In total, 40 residents, making up 10 families, are now facing the bleak reality of displacement. Temporary refuge has been offered at the First Baptist Church, while the American Red Cross is on hand to provide additional support.
The cause of this traumatic blaze is still a mystery, under investigation by fire officials. "It took over an hour to bring the fire under control," stated the Manchester Fire Department, also noting the complicating elements of snow and ice at the scene. Indeed, these conditions, the cold fingers of winter, caused "numerous slips and falls" among first responders, as mentioned by NBC Boston.
