Early Monday morning, residents of the West Ridge neighborhood in Chicago were roused by the chaos of a fire that tore through an apartment building, injuring two individuals. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the fire broke out before 3 a.m. in the 2300 block of West Touhy Avenue, thrusting the community into a desperate situation as the winter's bitter cold compounded the dangers.
Four residents were rescued from the burning edifice, with firefighters using a ladder to reach those trapped by an inferno that began on the first floor and quickly spread. "A lady came up in the back said that she had to get out through the windows," neighbor Irene Mazur told ABC 7 Chicago, portraying the harrowing escapes carried out by residents to evade smoke and flames. Thankfully, the woman referenced by Mazur lived on the ground floor, which facilitated her immediate egress through the apartment windows.
The emergency responders provided warming buses for residents in need, offering some respite from the cold as the fire continued to be battled. As the incident unfolded, two people were taken to area hospitals where they were listed in fair condition, according to fire department officials.
