
A late-night drive through Woodlawn ended in tragedy Sunday when a 31-year-old woman was shot in the head while riding as a passenger in a vehicle on Chicago’s South Side, authorities said. Someone on the street opened fire into the car in the 6700 block of South Langley Avenue. She was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. Area 1 detectives are investigating, and police said no one was in custody.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the shooting happened about 11:10 p.m. The woman, who had not been publicly identified as of late Sunday, was transported to the hospital where she died. Police told the paper the shooter fired from the street into the vehicle, and detectives with Area 1 were handling the probe. Authorities had not announced any arrests late Sunday.

The shooting was reported in the 6700 block of South Langley Avenue in Woodlawn, a South Side neighborhood just south of the University of Chicago campus. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, which lists its main campus at 5841 S. Maryland Ave., according to UChicago Medicine.
Police investigation
Chicago police said Area 1 detectives are investigating and that no one was in custody, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Investigators were working to determine a motive and identify the shooter, and police had not released additional details late Sunday. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact detectives.
