New Orleans police are working another overnight homicide after a man was found shot to death early Tuesday near North Galvez Street. Officers located the victim near the intersection with Piety Street, called in emergency medical services, and responders later pronounced him dead at the scene. Homicide detectives have taped off the block as they search for evidence and try to track down anyone who saw or heard what happened.
What NOPD says
According to WVUE, officers were called to the area around 3 a.m. after reports of gunfire and arrived to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound. New Orleans EMS confirmed the man was dead at the scene, and investigators say the case remains very much active.
How to help investigators
The NOPD is asking anyone who knows anything about the shooting to call the Homicide Section at 504-658-5300 or leave an anonymous tip with Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111, per NOPD News. Detectives are especially interested in talking with witnesses and in reviewing any surveillance or cellphone video from the surrounding streets as they canvass the neighborhood.
A pattern of overnight violence
This latest killing lands on top of a run of early-morning shootings across New Orleans. WWL reported that two other recent pre-dawn shootings in separate neighborhoods left two men dead in unrelated cases, highlighting the city’s ongoing struggle with gun violence. Police and community leaders continue to push for tips as those investigations move forward.
What’s next
As with other homicide cases, the Orleans Parish Coroner will release the victim’s name and determine the official cause of death after performing an autopsy, officials said. Investigators have not shared any suspect details so far; according to NOPD News, more information will be made public once it is developed and after the victim’s family has been notified.
