A 23-year-old man was shot near the McDonald's in the 4200 block of South Ashland Avenue in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon and was taken to a hospital in stable condition, Chicago police said. The shooter remained at large, and no arrests had been announced.
According to ABC7 Chicago, the gunfire was reported around 4:23 p.m. near the fast-food restaurant. Chopper 7 hovered over the scene as officers canvassed the area and placed evidence markers along the sidewalk.
Neighborhood history of shootings
The Back of the Yards has seen several violent incidents in recent weeks and months. A Feb. 5 case involved a driver shot then crashing into parked cars late at night. Local outlets have also reported mass and drive-by shootings in the neighborhood in past years, including a July 2025 incident that left seven people wounded, according to NBC Chicago.
Police response and investigation
Officers blocked off parts of the 4200 block of South Ashland while detectives searched the scene and gathered evidence, ABC7 Chicago reported. Chicago police have not released a motive or suspect description and said the investigation is ongoing.
