An Aventura man, Edgar Gonzalez, 64, has been taken into custody facing charges of possession of child sexual abuse material, following a disturbing discovery made by Geek Squad employees at Best Buy. Workers at the electronics service center uncovered the illicit content on Gonzalez's laptop while performing a routine backup to an external USB drive, as reported by Local10.
Upon their discovery in July last year, the Geek Squad manager at the Best Buy on Biscayne Boulevard promptly alerted the authorities. Gonzalez reportedly appeared to deflect blame before police presence, alleging to officers, "Don't tell me that guy put something onto my laptop" and expressing preemptive suspicion, saying "The first thing I thought was that guy was going to slip in some pedophile stuff," according to the arrest report obtained by NBC Miami.
The investigation further revealed that the files in question depicted girls as young as 10 years old. An Aventura Police detective confronted Gonzalez when he came to retrieve his device, leading to the seizure of his laptop, phone, and external hard drive. These devices were subsequently inspected under a search warrant, revealing a systematic collection of illegal material, specifically arranged in a directory with other pornographic content.
Gonzalez, who had previously mentioned an association with a woman and her children in the Dominican Republic, allegedly attempted to explain away the situation to another Best Buy manager in Miami Beach. He hinted that the content might have been misinterpreted by the staff at the Aventura store. Despite his attempts at justification, a forensic examination demonstrated that Gonzalez was indeed in possession of the CSAM files when he brought the laptop into Best Buy, as detailed in the police report. Yesterday, with an attorney in tow, Gonzalez surrendered to police and was arrested on three counts of possession of images showing the sexual performance of a child, and as of the morning following his arrest, he awaited bond to be set at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
