A 26-year-old Bloomington man is accused of hitting a woman on a bicycle, then driving home and leaving her hurt in the street, according to newly filed court documents. The filing names Matthew Alford as the driver and places the collision near South Smith Road and East Cobble Creek Drive. Police say the investigation is still active as detectives look for video and additional witnesses.

What court documents say

Witnesses and the bicyclist told officers the vehicle never tried to stop and simply kept going after the impact, according to court filings. The rider was left with multiple lacerations on her hands and legs and what documents describe as "severe bruising and swelling" to her left ankle.

Alford later told officers he had been behind the wheel, struck a woman on a bike and then "went home because he wasn't feeling well," the filings state. As part of the investigation, officers went to the 3800 block of East Boltinghouse Road, according to FOX59.

Charges and penalties

Prosecutors have charged Alford with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in moderate bodily injury, a Level 6 felony under Indiana law. A Level 6 felony carries a possible prison term of six months to two and a half years, with a one-year advisory sentence and potential fines up to $10,000, according to Indiana Code § 35-50-2-7.

Local context

Crashes involving cars and bikes have been a persistent concern in Monroe County. In December an Indiana University student was critically injured in a vehicle-bicycle collision, according to WBIW.

City officials have tried to get ahead of those kinds of wrecks with street-level changes. In 2025 Bloomington began installing traffic barriers on East 3rd Street to separate bike lanes from moving cars, part of a broader push to cut down on collisions.

What happens next

The case now moves to the courts. Prosecutors will review the full packet of reports as investigators continue collecting videos and witness statements, and Alford is expected to appear for an initial hearing on a date that has not yet been set.

Bloomington police are asking anyone with video or information about the collision to contact investigators as the case remains open, according to FOX59.
