On Thursday night at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, cellphone video captured a chaotic and dangerous scene: a group of people sprinting across the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, weaving through live traffic at one of the border's most packed approaches. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained 13 people and took them to the port for processing, while several others appeared to turn back toward Mexico. The clip has been circulating online and is already fueling questions about safety at the border and how authorities handle sudden surges like this.
What the Viral Video Shows
The group can be seen running through the southbound lanes of I-5 at about 8 PM, according to NBC 7 San Diego. The station reports that officers took 13 people into custody and transported them to the port of entry for processing, and that several others ran back into Mexico. NBC 7 San Diego's coverage includes the video that was shared with the station.
How CBP Says It Handles Surges
According to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection media release, the agency has in earlier incidents at San Ysidro temporarily suspended processing and set up barriers in advance when large groups gathered at the crossing to discourage unlawful entries. The release emphasizes that CBP will not allow for the unlawful entry of persons into the United States, at or between official ports of entry, a line the agency points to as its standing approach. The San Diego field office oversees processing at the San Ysidro port and is the primary local CBP contact when situations like this erupt.
Why Running the Freeway Is So Risky
Using the freeway corridor as a route has had deadly consequences in the past. Reporting on a 2017 smuggling run documents two migrants who were killed after being struck while running across southbound I-5 near Camino de la Plaza. Those previous fatalities are a grim reminder of how quickly a sprint toward the port can turn fatal for both migrants and unsuspecting drivers.
Tight Lanes and Heavy Construction at the Crossing
The southbound I-5 approach and the area around Camino de la Plaza have recently been under construction, with lane realignments designed to improve safety and traffic flow at the port. That work narrowed southbound lanes earlier this month. KPBS reported on the lane changes at the San Ysidro crossing, and federal project pages describe a broader modernization push at the port. These shifting patterns can make life harder for officers and first responders when people suddenly move into active traffic lanes near the inspection booths.
What Authorities Are Not Saying Yet
So far, local reporting has not released information about injuries, nationalities, or whether federal or state charges might follow. NBC 7 San Diego remains the main public source for the video and the reported custody count. CBP and local law enforcement agencies sometimes post more detailed incident summaries later in their online newsrooms or social channels, and we will follow up if additional information is made public.
