A Butler County deputy was hospitalized Thursday after being stabbed in the back while managing a traffic situation due to a car fire, as reported by Local12. The incident occurred in Madison Township at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Myers Road, where Deputy Mike Farthing had responded to a vehicle fire report, according to WHIO.
While assisting fire crews at the scene near a private residence, Farthing was approached from behind, and stabbed by 41-year-old Phillip Brandon Lovely. Following the attack, the deputy was able to call for aid, with multiple agencies responding to the emergency. The deputy was then taken to Atrium Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition, WLWT reports.
Lovely, the suspect who resides at the home adjacent to the car fire's location, has been taken into custody. Details regarding the motive behind the stabbing and whether Lovely has any prior history with law enforcement have not been disclosed at this time.
In a statement reflecting on the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, Sheriff Richard Jones told WLWT, "I went to the hospital to check on my deputy, and I’m very thankful—as we all are—that we are dealing with non-life threatening injuries at this time. Our deputies face life-or-death situations every single day, often without warning. This incident is a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers encounter simply doing their job, and we are extremely grateful that this situation did not turn out worse." The incident which took place in broad daylight, has unsettled the local community, and further investigations are underway.
As of now, the Butler County Sheriff's Office has not provided updates on Deputy Farthing's recovery or subsequent law enforcement directives in the wake of the incident.
