After more than a year on the run, Jacfar Abdi is back in Hamilton County and facing a courtroom instead of a departure gate. The Noblesville man, wanted in connection with a 2023 Fishers shooting, was arrested in Cairo and extradited to Indiana on Jan. 27, according to law enforcement. He is now held at the Hamilton County Jail on a series of felony charges tied to an armed robbery and shooting at a Fishers apartment complex, with hearings set for this spring.

What Police Say Happened That Night

Fishers police say the case began on Nov. 19, 2023, when officers learned that a gunshot victim was being treated at a local hospital and traced the shooting to Rhineland Pass at The District at Saxony Apartments. Investigators allege Abdi drove to the complex, climbed into the victim’s vehicle during an armed robbery and shot the man, who was then taken to the hospital by others, according to WKRC.

Tracking The Suspect To Cairo

According to officials, a Fishers detective assigned to the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force took on the fugitive investigation that eventually pinpointed Abdi in Cairo. Three FBI agents from Indianapolis then traveled to Egypt, arrested Abdi and brought him back to the United States on Jan. 27. “This arrest and extradition demonstrate the FBI’s relentless commitment to pursuing violent offenders, no matter where they flee,” FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O’Malley said, according to WIBC.

Charges And A Seven-Figure Bail

The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office has filed seven felony counts tied to the incident, including attempted murder, armed robbery, aggravated battery, theft of a firearm, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm at another person. Abdi was booked into the Hamilton County Jail with bail set at $1 million cash only and ordered to surrender his passport, according to a law-enforcement release reviewed by Current.

Court Dates On The Spring Docket

Online court records show Abdi pleaded not guilty at his initial hearing. A pretrial conference is scheduled for March 25, and a jury trial is tentatively set for June 8, according to WTHR.

What Police Are Saying About The Case

Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart praised the multiagency work that brought Abdi back to Indiana, highlighting the efforts of the department’s detective assigned to the FBI task force. That is how the department described the investigation in a statement reported by WTHR. Investigators say the case required coordination with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana, the FBI Legal Attaché in Cairo, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and other federal partners who assisted with the extradition, per local reporting.

The case highlights how local police and federal agencies can work in tandem to track down suspects who leave the country. With Abdi now in custody, Hamilton County prosecutors are set to move the case through the courts on the current schedule.
