A tragic incident unfolded in the Hickory Grove Division when a pedestrian, identified as Eric Neigenfind, was fatally struck by a vehicle in the early morning hours of February 9, police said. According to a statement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department , the collision between a Honda Accord and Mr. Neigenfind took place around 1 a.m. along the 8600 block of Harrisburg Road.
The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the accident where they discovered the 37-year-old male pedestrian unresponsive; emergency medical services pronounced him deceased at the scene, the incident occurred near the curb at the intersection of Harrisburg Road and 1st Run Court. The driver of the Honda, 42-year-old Tony Derell Hawk, remained at the location as officers arrived, which is a detail typically noted in crash investigations to determine the driver's willingness to cooperate.
Investigators have indicated that speed is not believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, and initial screenings showed that Hawk was not impaired when the incident occurred.
