The Town of Davie, in a collective effort with The Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, is set to host a significant piece of history – the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall. According to an announcement on the town's official website, the wall will be on display from April 24 to April 26 at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, located at 4201 Southwest 65th Way, Davie, Florida. This event, which allows 24-hour access to the public starting at 8 a.m. on the opening day, is an opportunity for the community to engage with a piece of our national memory, free of admission fees. More information can be found here.
The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the original Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., brings the experience of what can't travel – the storied echo of those honored by the monument – to different locations nationwide. Having first appeared in 1984, the wall travels across the country from April through November, typically spending a week at each site. Created to make the memorial accessible to those unable to visit the nation's capital, it bears the names of the fallen just as its full-sized counterpart, as detailed by the town's release.
While stationed at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, the Moving Wall isn't just there for passive observation; a series of special events and presentations will be held throughout the weekend, details of which will be announced in the upcoming months. For those wishing to find a name or remember a loved one, the wall provides the opportunity for visitors to make a free name rubbing from the etching on its surface, a tangible link to elements of the personal amidst the national narrative.
The Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, engaged in the noble task of supporting the coalition, will be receiving donations which will be accepted through their website.
