A large structure fire north of Edgewood Road triggered a San Mateo County alert last night, temporarily closing the stretch between Deer Creek Lane and Crestview Drive and telling drivers to find another way around. County officials said motorists should avoid the area for about an hour while authorities responded.
The advisory also went out on X, where CAL FIRE CZU amplified the county’s warning and repeated the call for drivers to steer clear of the affected segment while fire crews worked the scene, according to CAL FIRE CZU.

Where The Closure Hit
Edgewood Road runs along the ridge above Redwood City and San Carlos, right next to Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve, which has entrances from both Edgewood and Cañada roads, according to Friends of Edgewood. The road also cuts through the Crestview neighborhood and is a route many San Carlos residents use to reach Cañada College and nearby areas, per City-Data.
Traffic And Safety
San Mateo County relies on its SMC Alert system for targeted emergency notices like this one, and the county urges residents to lean on those official alerts for evacuation and road-closure details, according to the San Mateo County Department of Emergency Management. If you are in the area, watch for emergency vehicles and follow instructions from law enforcement and fire crews.
Why This Stretch Matters
The Edgewood corridor has a track record of brush and roadside fires. A large wildfire there in June 2022 forced evacuations and more road closures, raising concerns about roadside vegetation and alert procedures, as reported by SFGate. After that incident, officials reviewed and adjusted county alerting practices in debriefings and public meetings documented by regional coverage, per Citizen Portal.
