A Facebook Marketplace meetup in unincorporated Maine Township turned into an armed robbery on Tuesday, after two people who thought they were meeting a buyer for their jewelry instead faced a gun in the 8800 block of Carleah Drive. Two men showed up at the prearranged spot, and one of them allegedly pulled a firearm and took jewelry from the victims. No arrests have been announced, and Cook County Sheriff's Police detectives are asking anyone with information to step forward as the investigation continues.
According to the Cook County Sheriff's Office (Official), the victims had arranged through Facebook Marketplace to meet a potential buyer for their jewelry and were confronted when the two men arrived at the agreed location. The sheriff's post includes safety reminders, advising people to choose well-lit locations with cameras and to avoid entering another person's vehicle or inviting strangers into their home, and lists tip lines for Sheriff's Police Detectives at 708-865-4896 and 847-635-1188.
Who’s investigating
As outlined by the Cook County Sheriff's Office, the Sheriff's Police provide law-enforcement services to the county's unincorporated areas and maintain a Criminal Investigations Division that handles cases such as armed robbery. Investigators say they are tracking leads and are encouraging anyone who saw or heard anything in the area to call the tip lines or submit information through the department's reporting portal while detectives continue the probe.
Online meetups as a target
Police and local reporting have repeatedly shown that in-person meetups arranged through online marketplaces can be magnets for theft or violent robbery. In a recent Chicago case, a seller lost a $25,000 watch after meeting two men in a condo lobby, a stark reminder of the risks of exchanging high-value items outside monitored public spaces. CWBChicago reported on the downtown incident, while local outlets have regularly republished warnings from the sheriff's office about safety during transactions. FOX 32 Chicago has also carried recent coverage of crimes in Maine Township.
How to stay safe
The sheriff's post and local police urge a few simple precautions: meet in public, well-lit spots with cameras when possible; use local police department safe-exchange zones; bring a friend; and never invite a buyer into your home or get into a stranger's car. If you start to feel uneasy during a meetup, authorities advise walking away and contacting law enforcement immediately.
Anyone with information about the Maine Township robbery is asked to call Sheriff's Police Detectives at 708-865-4896 or 847-635-1188, or to submit tips through the Cook County Sheriff's Office tip portal. Detectives stressed that even a small detail could help move the investigation forward.
