Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman called the footage a “wake-up call” and pressed for immediate inspections as a winter storm approached.

The New York State Department of Transportation told CBS New York that inspections at the time found the span “structurally sound,” but that follow-up checks were planned.
Blakeman's Funding Pitch
Blakeman used the latest damage to promote his proposed State Highway Improvement Program, or SHIPs. He told LongIsland.com that Long Island's share of state transportation funding has slipped from nearly 24 percent historically to under 15 percent, and that highway investment on Long Island has dropped more than 50 percent in inflation-adjusted terms. Under SHIPs, he said, Long Island municipalities would see an additional $31.25 million in annual funding, and he vowed to direct NYSDOT to carry out immediate inspections of vulnerable bridges and roadways.

Infrastructure has become a centerpiece of Blakeman's gubernatorial pitch, according to his campaign materials, which spotlight local projects and promises to reprioritize road and bridge funding.
