A supposed 'mercy killing' in Warren County has ended with an 18 years to life prison sentence for a Deerfield Township man who admitted shooting his 79-year-old companion, then driving her to a local fire station for help.
Gerald Olin Finley, 78, pleaded guilty to murdering 79-year-old Emilia Vinokur, whom he shot twice in the head on Sept. 7, 2025, before pulling into a Deerfield Township firehouse and flagging down first responders.
The scene at the firehouse
Warren County Sheriff’s deputies were called around 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 7 to Deerfield Township Fire Station 57 in the 3000 block of West U.S. 22 after Finley waved firefighters over to his car. Crews found Vinokur unresponsive in the vehicle with two gunshot wounds to the head, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Journal-News.
Finley's claim and investigators' findings
Finley told investigators he had planned the shooting as a 'mercy killing' and said he had been thinking about it for about a week. When pressed, he could not point to any illness or terminal condition affecting Vinokur, according to WKRC Local 12.
A medical examination and autopsy later found no evidence of an underlying or terminal illness, the Warren County Prosecutor's Office said, per WHIO.
Plea, charges and sentence
Finley ultimately pleaded guilty to murder with a firearm specification and was immediately sentenced by Warren County Common Pleas Judge Donald Oda to 18 years to life, according to Journal-News.
His original indictment had included aggravated murder and multiple counts of felonious assault. Those additional charges were dismissed as part of the plea deal, and an earlier report, 77-year-old Gerald Finley charged, detailed his arrest back in September.
Prosecutor's response
Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell said investigators found "no logical explanation" for the killing and called it "just a sad and senseless killing," according to WLWT.
The sentence means Finley must serve at least 18 years before he is eligible for any parole review, according to local court records and reporting.
