A 61-year-old man from Lithonia, Georgia, is now facing a first-degree murder charge in Chicago after being extradited in connection with the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man in the Austin neighborhood last summer. Police identified the suspect as Donnell Simmons, who was arrested on Friday and brought back to Chicago. He is expected to appear in Cook County court on Sunday for his next hearing.
Arrest and charges
According to FOX 32 Chicago, Simmons faces one felony count of first-degree murder and was taken into custody in the 10000 block of W. O'Hare Street before being returned to Chicago. Police told the outlet that investigators identified Simmons as the second shooter in the Aug. 17, 2025, attack in the 4900 block of W. Adams St., where a 28-year-old man was killed.
Neighborhood context
Residents of Austin on Chicago's West Side are no strangers to gun violence, and this case lands in a neighborhood already worn down by repeated shootings. Earlier this year, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on a deadly shooting inside a neighborhood grocery store, and Austin Block Erupts In Gunfire detailed a December drive-by that left two people wounded. For many locals, each new case feels less like an isolated incident and more like part of a grim pattern.
What's next
FOX 32 Chicago reports that Simmons has a court date set for Sunday, when prosecutors will decide whether to pursue any additional charges. As the case moves through Cook County court, Simmons remains presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty.
