Residents near Beach Avenue and Pilarcitos Avenue in Half Moon Bay were told to hunker down indoors today after an urgent police activity alert prompted a shelter-in-place order for the neighborhood. The initial county alert did not spell out what prompted the response, only that people in the area should stay inside while officers worked the scene.
What officials said
According to CAL FIRE CZU, a San Mateo County (SMC) Alert was sent out instructing people in the Beach Ave and Pilarcitos Ave area to shelter in place while police activity was underway. CAL FIRE CZU credited the county alert as the source, and the warning quickly circulated through other local emergency accounts.
From @sanmateoco SMC Alert: Please Shelter in place in the area of Beach Avenue and Pilarcitos Avenue in Half Moon Bay, due to police activity.

How to shelter in place
San Mateo County’s guidance describes sheltering in place as going inside, locking doors and windows, shutting off heating or cooling systems that pull in outside air, and waiting for an official all clear, according to the county’s Office of Emergency Services. The county also advises limiting phone use to emergencies and watching for updates from official channels, per the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. If you face an immediate threat, officials say to call 911.
What residents should watch for
The latest advisory follows a string of similar coastside SMC Alerts earlier this month; a recent Hoodline report covered the Bean Hollow lockdown last Saturday. For now, officials have not released any information about arrests or injuries. Residents in the affected Half Moon Bay area are being urged to stay indoors and keep an eye on official county or local agency channels for the next update.
