Two more suspects have been hauled in over a Jan. 18 smash-and-grab at a Yuba City jewelry shop, a midday hit that left the owner hurt and a trove of gold still missing. With the latest arrests, police now have four people in custody in connection with the heist.
Yuba City police identified the newest arrestees as Michael Sanders, 24, and Kylen Byrd, 21. Both were booked into Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail and are expected to be transferred to Sutter County to face robbery-related charges, as reported by ABC10.
How the smash-and-grab unfolded
According to investigators, the robbery kicked off shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, when three masked suspects carrying hammers stormed a shop on the 400 block of Palora Avenue. They allegedly shattered display cases and scooped up high-value gold jewelry before bolting.
A witness tailed the suspects' getaway vehicle as it sped off, and officers later found the abandoned car near Richland Road and Estates Drive. Several pieces of jewelry were recovered, but detectives say hundreds of thousands of dollars in merchandise are still unaccounted for, as reported by Undercoverist.
Investigation and arrests
Police say the getaway car had been reported stolen out of Oakland earlier that same day. They credited coordination with Bay Area law enforcement, including the Oakland Police Department, with helping identify additional suspects, ABC10 reported.
During the chaos inside the store, the owner was struck in the chest with a hammer, police said. The injuries were described as non-life-threatening, but serious enough to add weight to the charges piling up in the case.
Regional pattern
The Yuba City case is unfolding against a backdrop of aggressive smash-and-grab hits on jewelry stores across Northern California. In many of those crimes, thieves have used cars and hammers to overwhelm small businesses in fast, coordinated strikes.
Similar mob-style robberies have already triggered multi-agency investigations and a string of arrests in the Bay Area, according to NBC Bay Area.
What’s next
Sanders and Byrd remain in custody at Santa Rita Jail and are expected to be transferred to Sutter County for booking and prosecution. Yuba City police say the investigation is still active and are asking anyone with information about the heist or the missing jewelry to contact them.
