The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) East Central division recently garnered recognition for their U.S. 36 (Pendleton Pike) Access Control project, walking away with the Traffic Safety Project of the Year award. The accolade celebrates the significant safety improvements along a corridor that, on average, bears the traffic of 40,000 vehicles per day. With injury-causing collisions slashed by nearly two-thirds between certain segments, and an overall crash reduction of 25%, the project has demonstrably bolstered roadway safety for thousands of daily commuters.
As INDOT East Central's social media post detailed, several key features of the project contributed to these outstanding results. Among the enhancements were the realignment of the 56th Street intersection and the installation of permanent concrete medians, which evidently played a role in the reduction of injury crashes, notably by nearly 50% throughout the entire corridor.
District Traffic Engineer Michael MacNeill and his team were recognized for their work on the U.S. 36 project. The improvements have made the road safer and more efficient, and officials continue prioritizing safety to meet growing travel demands. MacNeill and his team received widespread congratulations for their efforts.
