Last Thursday, a 67-year-old Kokomo man was taken into custody after deputies executed a search warrant at a local residence and uncovered what investigators describe as a massive cache of child sexual abuse material. Authorities identified the suspect as Lyle Sanders and said he was booked on five preliminary counts of possession of child sex abuse material. Local detectives worked the case alongside state Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) resources.
According to the Howard County Sheriff's Office, deputies served a warrant in the 200 block of Lody and seized multiple electronic devices. An on-scene preview of at least one device turned up roughly 20,000 image files alleged to be child sexual abuse material, investigators said, and 67-year-old Sanders was taken into custody on five counts of possession. The release notes that Investigator Kysha Quirk, an affiliated member of the Indiana ICAC Task Force, led the probe, with Kokomo Police Department detectives assisting the sheriff's office.
How the investigation started
The sheriff's statement says the probe started last June, when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a CyberTip generated by Microsoft that flagged uploads of suspected child sexual abuse material. That flow, where technology companies flag problematic content and route it into the system for investigators, is the standard mechanism for these cases, according to Microsoft. The CyberTipline itself is operated by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Search warrant and what officers found
Deputies executed the search warrant last Thursday and collected multiple electronic devices from the residence, the sheriff's office said. A preliminary on-scene review identified roughly 20,000 images that investigators allege are child sexual abuse material. The Kokomo Police Department's Digital Crimes Unit assisted with the operation, along with an Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K-9 named Gelid. Gelid is part of the Indiana ICAC ESD K-9 program, which is used to sniff out hidden electronic storage devices, according to Indiana ICAC task force information.
Legal implications
Sanders was booked on five preliminary counts of possession of child sex abuse material, which the sheriff's office emphasized are allegations at this stage. "The filing of the information is merely an allegation and persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty," the department said in its release. Under Indiana law, a Level 5 felony generally carries a sentencing range of one to six years with an advisory sentence of three years, although any punishment would depend on a conviction and the exact statutes ultimately charged.
Why this matters locally
The Indiana ICAC Task Force, overseen by the Indiana State Police, coordinates many of these investigations across the state and says its investigators routinely sift through thousands of tips while working with local agencies to identify victims and prioritize cases. Tools such as digital forensic labs, ESD K-9 teams and cross-agency information sharing are key to handling large collections of files and tracing online activity back to specific locations in communities like Kokomo.
How to report tips
Authorities encourage anyone with information about online child exploitation to contact local law enforcement or file a report with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s CyberTipline.
