Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed late Sunday in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, where officers followed the sound of gunfire to find him gravely wounded on a South Side block.
The shooting happened around 11:19 p.m. on the 600 block of West 61st Place. Officers on patrol heard shots and responded to the area, where they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds, according to ABC7 Chicago. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and later pronounced dead. The case remains under investigation, with Area One detectives handling the homicide, ABC7 reported.
Citywide trends
The killing comes against the backdrop of a broader downturn in violence across Chicago. The city recorded notable drops in shootings and homicides in 2025, with police data showing sharp declines that local violence-intervention groups credit to coordinated, neighborhood-level efforts, according to CBS Chicago. Still, individual blocks on the South Side, including parts of Englewood, continue to absorb the shock of isolated but deadly incidents.
Block's recent incidents
The 600 block of West 61st Place has seen deadly violence before. The Chicago Sun-Times reported a fatal shooting on the same block in 2019 that also sent a victim to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Those repeat tragedies underscore how certain stretches of the South Side carry a disproportionate share of the city’s gun violence.
Police have not released additional details about the victim or any possible motive, and no further information on the investigation was immediately available, ABC7 Chicago reported. Area One detectives remain on the case.
