When a routine call escalated into a potential tragedy, the West Palm Beach Fire Department's recent acquisition, a hazmat monitor financed by a Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation grant, became the hero of the hour. On February 3, as per the fire department's report, the device detected lethal levels of carbon monoxide in a local residence, leading to the rescue of six individuals.
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters faced a family suffering from classic signs of carbon monoxide poisoning such as headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Although burning charcoal indoors to brave a cold front, it was the silent, odorless killer that posed the real threat, unbeknownst to the residents. According to the West Palm Beach Fire Department, “Using the grant-funded hazmat device, firefighters detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide inside the home.”
The prompt evacuation and immediate medical intervention performed by firefighters resulted in the hospitalization of one adult and five minors, with a full recovery expected for all patients. This incident not only highlights the risk of carbon monoxide exposure from indoor burning of fuel but also the life-saving impact of advanced technology made available through grant funding.
