What started as a routine rideshare stop in Logan Square turned into a hazmat scene late Monday night, after a driver and passenger suddenly got sick shortly after picking up a package. Both were taken to Humboldt Park Health and are expected to recover.
Just before 10 p.m., Chicago police and the Chicago Fire Department's hazardous-incident team were called to the 2200 block of North Monticello Avenue after the driver picked up the package. Video from the scene shows emergency crews securing the vehicle and carefully removing the box. Detectives are now reviewing the package and surrounding evidence to determine what was inside and whether there is any risk to the public, according to CBS Chicago.
How Hazmat Teams Assess Unknown Packages
When a suspicious package triggers a response, HazMat crews typically lock down the area, use air and gas detection meters, and ventilate or decontaminate as needed while they work to identify any unknown materials. The Chicago Fire Department equips its teams with multi-gas meters and wireless monitors and follows set protocols that help responders quickly decide whether to call in specialized HazMat units, according to Firehouse.
Investigation Continuing
Chicago police detectives say the investigation is ongoing and have not released additional details about the package's contents or where it came from. Authorities have not indicated any broader public exposure or announced any arrests connected to the incident. CBS Chicago reports that investigators are examining the package and plan to release more information when it becomes available.
