
In an announcement that highlights commitment to community and experience in law enforcement, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Tanya Terry appointed Major Corey Mims as the new North District Commander, as detailed in a post on IMPD News social media. Effective immediately, Mims will take command with a formal ceremony to be announced and held at a later date.
"Major Mims is well-acquainted with North District, having served in multiple roles that enabled him to build strong relationships with officers, community leaders, and neighbors in the community," Chief Terry remarked on his appointment and highlighted his capacity for connecting with the community and law enforcement officers, Mims’ deep ties to the area and the earned respect from his community involvement affirm the decision for his new role. Mims joined the IMPD in 2015, and after completing his training, spent time on patrol, in the Traffic Unit, and as a Field Training Officer before rising through the ranks to his latest post.
According to his service record shared by IMPD News, Mims has been fundamental in various capacities including his time on the North District Violent Crimes Task Force and the Community Relations Unit after his promotion to Sergeant in 2021, his advancement in 2023 as Lieutenant in the Commercial Crimes Branch was punctuated by his oversight of vice, human trafficking and nuisance abatement investigations and his involvement with the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force.
In his ascent within the department, Mims held the position of Major in the Community Engagement and Outreach Bureau since July 2024, where his leadership was integral to fostering initiatives that aimed to cement the bond between the public and the police, Commander Mims’ decorated career includes recognition as an IACP 40 Under 40 awardee in 2025, which honored his leadership, imagination, and tangible influence in law enforcement, during his tenure Mims has also contributed as an instructor and mentor at the IMPD Leadership Academy.
Mims' connection to Indianapolis runs deep, being a lifelong Hoosier, educated at Speedway High School followed by a Criminal Justice degree from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. His personal life as a family man rounds out his profile as he steps into a role expected to bring stability and ongoing progress to the North District community leadership.
