Man Taken Into Custody After Crashing Tesla, Barricading in Plantation Home Amid Mental Health Crisis

A tense standoff in Plantation ended without further incident as a man, after crashing his Tesla and barricading himself in a local home, was taken into custody by authorities. The ordeal began in the 8600 block of Gatehouse Road and quickly escalated, drawing a SWAT team to the quiet neighborhood, Local 10 News reports.

According to the information provided by the suspect's brother to Local 10 News, Richard Colbert, 33, seemed to be experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident, and during the standoff, he was actively livestreaming from inside the home, Colbert's brother identifying him to the news crew as the man inside and him was heard to say on the livestream, “So stop scaring me with these bums,” his speech punctuated by confusing references to jets and fake spiders. Plantation Police Department issued an alert via X, advising residents to keep clear of the area as the situation unfolded, CRT and SWAT teams were deployed, and the community was urged to stay clear of the ongoing police activity.

While trapped in the home, Colbert communicated various distressing thoughts over the livestream, including concerns about his personal safety and his daughter's well-being. He addressed the officers outside through the loudspeaker, saying, “I am thinking about my daughter,” further adding, in a plea for safety and understanding, “Alright, let me tell you something, white man. OK? Let me tell you something, white man. I am thinking about my daughter… keep me protected. I don’t got no guns, just my eye. I can prove, I don’t got nothing. If they kill me, bro, they was trying to stop me from making their movie because it was going to be the best movie ya’ll ever seen," according to Local 10 News.

As the standoff reached its conclusion, the details surrounding the initial crash and the reasons behind Colbert's actions remained elusive, the authorities having not released further information.
