An Oakland man is headed to federal prison for five years after what prosecutors describe as a brazen San Francisco mail robbery that unfolded amid a wider 2023 crime spree involving stolen cars and hundreds of swiped letters.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin on Monday handed Joseph Michael McBee a 60-month sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, according to The Mercury News. Prosecutors said McBee pleaded guilty last fall to one federal robbery count and returned to court this week for sentencing after both sides filed detailed memoranda earlier this month.
The San Francisco Police Department said McBee was arrested on Oct. 31, 2023, after what it called an "extensive and dangerous" pursuit involving multiple agencies and a drone-assisted capture in Pleasanton. Officers booked him on several active warrants tied to vehicle thefts, and investigators have been coordinating with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service as the broader probe continues, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
Prosecutors say the mail robbery itself unfolded on Oct. 10, 2023, when McBee and two accomplices drove into San Francisco looking for a letter carrier. The victim was pushed to the ground, had his wallet taken, and later reported bruising to both arms. The group allegedly fled with more than 500 pieces of mail. Court filings and news accounts say the crew had already stolen a 2023 Toyota Camry from a Daly City Toyota dealership and a 2015 Kia Soul in Oakland, and that McBee later used the victim's credit card at an Oakland gas station, according to The Mercury News. Two co-defendants, Ebony Reeves and Felix Wilson, have pleaded guilty, prosecutors said.
Court Filings Show Arguments Over Sentence
Recent docket entries indicate that both sides laid out sharply different views on punishment in sentencing briefs filed in early February. The defense pushed for a downward variance from guideline recommendations, while federal prosecutors argued for a substantial prison term, according to the court's latest filings. The memoranda and related docket activity are posted on the Northern District of California's online case pages.
Federal Penalties And Broader Context
Robbing a mail carrier, along with related mail theft offenses, is a federal crime that can carry stiff penalties, particularly when weapons are involved or when thieves target mail keys in an organized fashion. Federal prosecutors highlighted a regional surge in mail-related crimes in an October 2023 press release, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of California. National reporting also shows letter carrier robberies rose last year, even as the Postal Service launched its Project Safe Delivery initiative to crack down on the trend, according to AP News.
For postal workers on the street and residents waiting on paychecks and prescriptions, McBee's case lands as another reminder of why local and federal agencies have made mail theft a priority. McBee will serve his federal term first, then begin the court-ordered supervised release, and prosecutors say the larger mail theft investigation, which has already produced additional guilty pleas, is still active.
