As a frigid blast descends upon Palm Beach County, local authorities are mobilizing to offer respite for those at the mercy of the elements. The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a chilly warning—temperatures are expected to plummet into the low 40's, with wind chill values pushing them even lower—in the more biting low to mid 30's. In response, the county is taking measures to support its vulnerable populations by opening cold weather shelters tonight.
According to Palm Beach County, shelters will be available from 7:00 P.M. this evening until 9:00 A.M. tomorrow, offering a warm place to stay for those in need. Among the shelters opening their doors are the Belle Glade Transitional Shelter and Lake Village at the Glades, located at 341 NW 11th Street in Belle Glade, FL, and the Westgate Park and Recreation Center, situated at 3691 Oswego Ave., West Palm Beach, FL.
Additional support is coming from the Salvation Army Center of Hope at 1577 N Military Trail #1 in West Palm Beach, which will also open as a cold-weather haven. To assist residents in reaching these shelters, Palm Tran Connection has arranged for bus pickups starting at 6:00 P.M. and another round at 7:30 P.M. along established routes. The county's decision underscores the seriousness of the weather situation and the potential dangers posed by the cold, particularly the risk of hypothermia.
