An early-morning house fire in Olive Branch turned deadly Tuesday when flames tore through a home on Piney Ridge Drive, killing one person, city officials said. Fire crews were called to the residence around 3 a.m. and arrived to find heavy flames pouring from the rear of the house. A person found inside was pronounced dead near the back door, and authorities have not yet released any identifying details. Investigators remained at the scene into the morning.
Back Of Home Engulfed Before Firefighters Could Reach Victim
Firefighters reported that the back of the home was fully engulfed in flames and that one person was found inside and pronounced dead at the scene, according to FOX13 Memphis. The outlet notes that the city has released only limited information so far, including no age or gender for the victim. Crews stayed on-site through the early hours to knock down hot spots and secure the property for fire investigators.
Fire Department Handles Hundreds Of Calls Each Month
The Olive Branch Fire Department, which protects roughly 40,000 residents and responds to about 5,000 calls a year, handled Tuesday’s response, according to the City of Olive Branch Fire Department. The agency operates multiple engine and truck companies out of several stations across the city. Officials have not given a timeline for when they expect to complete their origin-and-cause investigation.
Recent Blasts Put Extra Spotlight On Fire And Utility Safety
The fatal house fire comes on the heels of other fire-related incidents in Olive Branch, including a late-January commercial explosion that authorities tied to a natural-gas device and that prompted a sizable emergency response, as reported in coverage of the mystery boom that gutted a Germantown Road building. That earlier blast and reports of gas odors around the city have put added attention on utility and construction safety in recent weeks. City officials have not connected that episode to Tuesday’s deadly house fire.
Cause Of Deadly Fire Still Under Investigation
City officials said the cause of the Piney Ridge Drive blaze remains under investigation and that more information will be released as it becomes available, according to FOX13 Memphis. The coroner or medical examiner will determine the victim’s official cause of death, and investigators typically work with fire marshals to pinpoint how and where a fire started. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Olive Branch officials.
