A second teenage suspect is now in custody in connection with the March 30, 2025 shooting outside an east-side gas station that killed 17-year-old Tywon Jones, authorities say. Indianapolis detectives made the arrest earlier yesterday, marking a key development in a case that has lingered for nearly a year.
Second teen taken into custody
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reports that the newly arrested suspect is 17 years old and was taken into custody yesterday morning. Prosecutors may consider seeking to charge the teen as an adult, according to WISH-TV. Because of the suspect’s age, police have not released his name.
What happened March 30, 2025
The gunfire broke out just after 7 p.m. on March 30, 2025, outside the Exxon Mobil Silver Express Foodmart in the 10000 block of East 42nd Street at Mitthoeffer Road. Officers arrived to find two teenage males suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to Riley Children’s Hospital, where one of the teens was later pronounced dead. Detectives later determined that calls from a nearby block on Ellis Drive were tied to the same shooting, according to WRTV.
Victim identified
The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the teen who died as 17-year-old Tywon Jones and ruled his death a homicide, WISH-TV reported. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, IMPD asked anyone with information to contact the department’s Homicide Office.
Legal next steps
It will be up to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to decide whether the newly arrested 17-year-old is tried in juvenile court or moved into adult court. In previous high-profile cases involving serious allegations, Marion County prosecutors have asked juvenile courts to waive jurisdiction so adult charges can be filed, according to WRTV.
Police ask for tips
IMPD homicide detectives say the investigation is still active and are again calling on the public for help. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at crimetips.org or by calling 317-262-TIPS. Investigators also list the IMPD Homicide Office number as 317-327-3475.
