Investigators from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) swiftly made an arrest following a tragic hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of an adult white male pedestrian. The fatal event occurred on Shadeland Avenue on a Monday night, and resulted in the prompt detention of Jevontae Wilkins, 25, who now faces a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in death.
According to a social media post from IMPD News, on Monday evening, IMPD East District officers rushed to the 3400 block of N. Shadeland Ave upon receiving reports of a pedestrian being struck. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Indianapolis Fire Department medics. The vehicle involved had left the area before officers could arrive, prompting an extensive investigation by IMPD Crash investigators, who gathered evidence, photographed the scene, and interviewed witnesses. The suspect, Wilkins, did not evade capture for long as he turned himself in, convinced by his family and friends yesterday.
The decision on the final charges will be made by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. Despite the serious nature of his arrest, it must be stated that these charges are accusations and the legal principle that Wilkins should be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law stands firm. The case, documented under IP260008210, is ongoing, and further developments are expected as the judicial process unfolds.
