A spate of mail theft incidents across Miami has culminated in the arrest of a suspect for multiple offenses. Jael Miguel Burgos-Ortiz, 30, alleged to have been involved in mail theft both in Westchester and Miami Springs, was apprehended by Miami Springs police, as confirmed through their social media post shared yesterday.
Burgos-Ortiz, who police say was already out on probation, now faces a slew of charges including burglary, theft, drug possession, and various fraud-related offenses, as reported by Local10. The arrest follows the capture of a suspect on video engaging in theft from a mailbox on South Drive near Royal Poinciana Boulevard, an event eerily identical to one that occurred precisely a month earlier.
The suspected midnight mailbox prowler, whose video footage was circulated among concerned citizens, escalated his alleged activities to include burglary and damage to a dwelling during the thefts, which amounted to over $1,000 in structural damages. According to the charges enumerated by Miami Springs, these crimes can be traced back to the same modus operandi and individual responsible for the earlier incident in January.
An additional set of charges levied against Burgos-Ortiz includes masked burglary of an occupied dwelling – two counts, possession of a controlled substance: crystal meth, and unlawful possession of 5 or more identities, among several others. The suspect, in both instances, attempted to disguise his face with clothing, were captured by the vigilant eyes of a homeowner's Ring camera. The second time, the prowler was seen nonchalantly walking up to the mailbox and then strolling away.
The diligent work of the Miami Springs Police has been praised by residents who are relieved at Burgos-Ortiz's arrest. His capture underscores the importance of community vigilance and the rapid response of law enforcement. A local resident's Ring Camera video played a crucial role in the suspect's apprehension, as it provided clear evidence of the crimes. This resident's statement shared by Miami Springs expressed immediate concern and an urgent call to police: "I woke around 1 am to an alert on my ring doorbell. The camera captured a masked person hoping to steal mail from my empty mailbox. I called the Miami Springs police immediately! Within minutes, they were at my door! If you recognize this person, please contact the Miami Springs Police Department."
