Alex Vindman is not easing into Florida politics. The retired Army lieutenant colonel held his first in-person campaign event Monday night in Sunrise, telling Broward Democrats he is all-in on a bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody. The meet-and-greet, pitched as a conversation with local party clubs, drew supporters from across Broward County and doubled as Vindman’s debut public campaign stop in the region.
Speaking to several Broward County Democratic clubs, Vindman cast the race as a fight over what he called “chaos” and “corruption.” “We are going to end the chaos, we are going to crush corruption, and we are going to cut costs,” he told the crowd, according to WPLG Local 10.
From Capitol Testimony To Sunrise Stage
Vindman vaulted into the national spotlight after testifying in President Trump’s first impeachment and later leaving the National Security Council, a storyline his campaign has leaned on heavily. As reported by the Associated Press, that high-profile testimony made Vindman a familiar name well beyond Florida’s borders.
He formally launched his Senate bid in late January, and his campaign says day one was a financial jolt. The operation pulled in more than $1.7 million in its first 24 hours, a figure reported by the USA TODAY Network, and credited small-dollar online donors for the surge.
Moody On Defense In A Closely Watched Race
Vindman is taking on incumbent Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, who was appointed to the seat in January 2025 after Marco Rubio left the Senate. She is now running in the 2026 special election to finish out the term. That appointment, combined with the compressed special-election calendar, is part of what has put Florida’s Senate contest on national watch lists, according to CNBC.

Florida has shifted more conservative in recent election cycles, which makes any statewide Democratic pickup an uphill climb. Even so, analysts say Vindman’s national profile and small-dollar fundraising operation could raise the race’s profile and potentially tighten the contest, according to Axios. The Democratic primary is scheduled for Aug. 18, 2026, with the special general election set for Nov. 3, 2026.
