In a statement to the Miami Herald, the company said it expects to shutter the Homestead operation in July 2026 to "launch a two‑year retrofit" and convert the inventory hub into a full-fledged fulfillment center. Amazon told the paper it has been offering affected employees other jobs within the company and plans to let them opt back in once the overhaul is finished.
The Homestead campus opened in September 2024, according to CBS Miami, and commercial listings put the complex at roughly 1.35 million square feet. County records show Miami‑Dade sold about 76.86 acres to Amazon for around $22 million under an economic‑development deal that came with hiring and investment promises attached. LoopNet lists the building's total area at about 1,348,296 square feet.
What Amazon Says Happens Next for Workers
Amazon told the Miami Herald it plans to pour roughly $200 million more into the Homestead campus and expects to reopen the site in mid‑to‑late 2028 as a fulfillment center where staffers will pack customer orders. Company officials said they have been offering transfers to other Amazon facilities for some Homestead workers while construction and retrofitting are under way, with the promise that employees can return once the upgraded operation comes back online.
