A 19-year-old man was killed and a 20-year-old man was critically wounded just after midnight Monday when gunmen opened fire on their parked car in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. The shooting happened near 50th and Justine streets, and Area One detectives are handling the case.
According to FOX 32 Chicago, the two men were sitting in a parked vehicle when a dark-colored sedan pulled up. Two people got out of that car and opened fire, hitting both victims. The 19-year-old was shot multiple times and died at the scene, while the 20-year-old was struck in the back and taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition.
CBS Chicago reported that officers responded around 12:44 a.m. to the 5000 block of South Justine Street. The outlet said detectives from Area One were called to the scene and that the investigation remains active.
Police: Pair Exited Sedan Before Opening Fire
Per FOX 32 Chicago, after the suspects fired into the parked car, they got back into the dark sedan and fled. As of Monday morning, the Cook County medical examiner had not identified the 19-year-old, and police had not released any information about the suspects while detectives continued to work the case.
Back of the Yards Has Seen Recent Shootings
The neighborhood has faced other violent incidents in recent months, including a mass shooting last July that left at least seven people seriously wounded, according to ABC7 Chicago. That episode and others have highlighted the area’s persistent struggle with gun violence.
