A grim discovery behind Vallejo police headquarters has detectives working a homicide case that unfolded practically in their own backyard.

Vallejo officers were called around 3:15 PM on Monday to the 1100 block of Georgia Street, behind the Vallejo Police Department near the railroad tracks, after a report of a possible deceased person, according to SFGATE. First responders found a man dead at the scene, with the body exposed to the elements, and investigators are treating the case as a homicide while they work to identify him and reconstruct his final hours.

The Solano County coroner later determined the victim had at least one gunshot wound and confirmed that the body showed signs of prolonged exposure, SFGATE reported. Authorities have not released the man’s name, pending notification of his family.

Coroner: Scene Hampered by Exposure

The condition of the body complicated the early stages of the investigation. Detectives and the Solano County coroner told investigators they could not determine an exact cause of death at the scene because of the degree of exposure and the body’s condition, KRON4 reported.

Investigators combed the area along the tracks for evidence and say the homicide inquiry remains active.
