A tense late-night standoff in Bridgeview ended with a 20-year-old man in handcuffs and his family safely outside, after police say he pointed a weapon at his mother and a 13-year-old boy inside a home in the 7800 block of Oketo. A 17-year-old relative escaped the house and walked to the Bridgeview police station to get help, kicking off hours of negotiations involving SWAT officers. Police say the man eventually surrendered and a weapon was recovered. No injuries were reported.
How police were alerted
Around 11 p.m. Saturday, officials say a 17-year-old family member walked several blocks to the Bridgeview Police Department and told officers that 20-year-old Mustafa Farraj had threatened relatives with a weapon inside the home. Police say SWAT officers and trained negotiators went to the 7800 block of Oketo and later identified the weapon as an air rifle, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
What happened at the scene
When officers reached the residence, they say Farraj allowed his mother and the 13-year-old boy — who has autism, according to local coverage — to leave the home while he remained inside and negotiations continued. At about 1 a.m. Sunday, police say Farraj came to the door and surrendered to officers, who seized the weapon. No injuries or property damage were reported, as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
Charges and next steps
Bridgeview police told local outlets that Farraj already had an outstanding aggravated assault warrant at the time of the incident. Authorities say they are pursuing an additional aggravated assault charge tied to what happened inside the Oketo home. Farraj was taken into custody without further incident and will be processed through the local court system, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
