Honorable Mention, an elevated sports lounge tucked beneath downtown Portland's historic Benson Hotel, is set to open to the public on Friday, March 6, promising multiple big-screen TVs, chef-driven plates and a hidden speakeasy expected to debut in the weeks after launch. The project has already turned heads because NBA star Damian Lillard is listed among its owners, and the venue says it plans to blend game-day energy with rotating art displays that spotlight local Black artists.
Who's behind the project
As reported by The Oregonian/OregonLive, Lillard is a part owner and local operator Jr. Duperrier is a co-owner. The story notes that project partners include Moda Health president Dr. William Johnson and David Lucas. It also reports that Portland artist Tristan Kwame Irving created a portrait of early Black NFL star Fritz Pollard that will be the first in a monthly rotation of original pieces by Black artists.
Where and when to go
Honorable Mention's official site lists a grand opening for March 6 and gives the address as 309 SW Broadway beneath the Benson Hotel. The site also posts hours, a menu of elevated game-day plates and a contact number for private-party bookings, and invites guests to check upcoming events online.
What to expect at opening
Benson Hotel general manager Ryan Kunzer told The Oregonian/OregonLive that "private friends and family events were scheduled Wednesday and Thursday and a grand opening was set for Friday." With a speakeasy in the mix and a rotating art program on deck, the room is clearly aiming for nights that are about more than whatever is on television, and Lillard's name will likely help on busy game nights.
Bottom line
For menus, hours and reservations, the bar's website has the most current information. Fans curious about the space can follow Honorable Mention on Instagram or visit Honorable Mention for updates and bookings.
