Yesterday's ride on Escalon-Bellota Road ended in tragedy when a motorcycle crashed into a pickup towing a livestock trailer, killing the rider and leaving his passenger with major injuries, according to authorities. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman riding with him was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. The rural stretch of road south of Highway 4 was shut down for hours while first responders and investigators worked the scene. The pickup driver was not reported injured.
Crash details
The California Highway Patrol told CBS Sacramento that the collision happened shortly after 1 PM. A Ford pickup towing a livestock trailer had slowed to make a left turn when a 2008 Honda sport-type motorcycle behind it did not slow in time. The bike hit the trailer and both people on the motorcycle were thrown from it.
CHP identified the rider as a 43-year-old Modesto man who died at the scene, and the passenger as a 41-year-old Modesto woman who was taken to a hospital with major injuries, according to the agency. No additional identifying information has been released.
Road safety on Escalon-Bellota
Escalon-Bellota Road has seen more than its share of serious wrecks in recent years, and locals know the corridor can be unforgiving, especially where higher speeds meet heavy vehicles and turning traffic. In 2024, a Lodi motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a big rig on the same road, a crash that raised similar worries about trucks and turning movements on the corridor, as reported by KCRA.
San Joaquin County planning documents show collision data and community comments along the Mariposa–Escalon‑Bellota corridor, including specific hotspots where residents have pressed for turn lanes, better signage and stronger enforcement to curb dangerous driving behavior.
Investigation ongoing
The CHP is still piecing together exactly how Sunday’s crash unfolded. The agency told CBS Sacramento that it is not yet known whether impairment played any role. Officials have not released further details about the crash scene or the hospital treating the passenger, and investigators are continuing to reconstruct the sequence that led up to the impact with the trailer.
How to help
Anyone who saw the collision or has information that might help the investigation is asked to call the CHP Stockton communications center at 209-938-4800. CHP is the lead agency on the case and will provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
