Yesterday on Coronado’s Silver Strand, it ended in tragedy when a 78-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and killed, city officials said.
The collision happened at about 1:35 PM near the intersection of Silver Strand Boulevard and Tulagi Road, shutting the highway down for several hours while emergency crews and investigators worked the scene. Responding officers and bystanders attempted life-saving measures, but the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his name, pending notification of the family.
Investigators told The San Diego Union-Tribune that the crash occurred yesterday and confirmed that both officers and bystanders tried to revive the man before he was declared dead. The outlet reported that officials are withholding the victim’s identity until relatives can be notified.
"Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash," investigators told The San Diego Union-Tribune. As investigators documented the scene, officers closed the roadway and directed motorists to turn around at Tarawa Road, advising drivers to use the Coronado Bridge as a detour. Traffic backups lingered into the afternoon while crews cleared the area.
Silver Strand safety and traffic context
According to the City of Coronado's traffic report, the Silver Strand segment of State Route 75 carried an average of about 17,243 vehicles per day, and the city recorded 22 collisions along that corridor in 2020, with no fatal crashes reported that year. The narrow, two-lane stretch is a key route for commuters, tourists and Navy base traffic, and city staff have long kept a close eye on the corridor’s safety, especially when incidents shut down lanes and choke off access.
Coronado Police continue to investigate the collision and have not released additional details. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Coronado Police Department as investigators work to piece together exactly what happened on the busy coastal roadway.
