A 45-year-old man was shot and killed inside his Englewood home early Saturday after someone in a passing car opened fire on the building, police said. Officers found the victim unresponsive inside a residence on the 5700 block of South May Street, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shooting described as a drive-by from a passing car
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago police say the shooting happened around 5 a.m. when a car drove past the home, and shots struck the man in the head. The vehicle fled, and detectives remained on the block collecting evidence and speaking with neighbors.
May Street has been a recurring focus for police
The 5700 block of South May Street has already drawn heavy police attention this winter, from a nine-hour SWAT standoff that ended in an apparent suicide to a Feb. 20 shooting that left a man seriously wounded. FOX 32 Chicago reported that neighbors say the recent violence has intensified calls for a stronger police presence on the block.
Detectives investigating; no arrests reported
Chicago police said Area One detectives are investigating the killing and that no one is in custody, per the Chicago Sun-Times. Authorities have not released information about a suspect or motive and are asking anyone with knowledge of the shooting to contact investigators.
