What looked like a routine food delivery on a quiet Winnetka street turned into a terrifying home invasion Sunday evening, when six armed suspects stormed a house and briefly held a resident at gunpoint before that person escaped unharmed. The break-in shook the typically calm 700-block of Rosewood Avenue and triggered an intensive police canvas of the neighborhood.
The incident unfolded at about 5:27 p.m., when one suspect reportedly posed as a food delivery driver to get the door opened. Police say six people then forced their way inside and demanded items from the resident, who managed to flee and call authorities, according to ABC7 Chicago. Investigators believe the group took off in a black Acura RDX that may not have had license plates, and the victim was not physically hurt.
Police alert and what they described
Winnetka officials quickly issued a community alert describing the suspects as masked males and said they demanded “specific items” from inside the home before bolting, as reported by The Record North Shore. Village communications manager Josie Clark told the outlet that no medical attention was needed at the scene and urged anyone with information to contact investigators at (847) 501-6034.
Delivery-driver ruse part of a wider pattern
The fake-delivery ploy is not some one-off trick. Using bogus delivery covers has become a go-to tactic in robberies around the Chicago area, prompting police warnings after several incidents targeting both drivers and homeowners, according to reporting by FOX 32 Chicago. Law-enforcement officials advise residents to double-check unexpected deliveries at the door and to call 911 if anything feels off.
Winnetka police say detectives are following up on leads and reviewing available surveillance footage as they work to identify the six suspects. Officers are asking anyone with tips to call (847) 501-6034 and are urging residents to stay on high alert, reporting any suspicious activity to 911 while the investigation continues, according to The Record North Shore.
