More than three months after a Thanksgiving family argument in Waggaman ended in gunfire, a Jefferson Parish grand jury on Friday indicted a Marrero man on a second-degree murder charge in the shooting death of his brother, a St. John the Baptist Parish deputy. The indictment follows an earlier magistrate court appearance at which the defendant pleaded not guilty, and the court later raised his bail after jurors returned the murder charge.
Grand Jury Returns Indictment, Bail Raised
According to NOLA.com, Jefferson Parish jurors indicted 32-year-old Darius Guerin on second-degree murder and obstruction of justice charges. A judge increased his bail to $1.2 million after the indictment. Investigators allege Guerin shot his brother five times, dragged the body out of the home and left it in the street. Court documents cited in the report also say relatives' cell phones were seized at the scene, an allegation that led to the obstruction count.

The shooting took place Nov. 27, 2025, on the 30 block of Marigold Lane, where deputies found 35-year-old Shaquille Guerin suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to WDSU. St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre described Guerin as a dedicated public servant who had just left work, and neighbors told reporters the killing stunned the West Bank community. Chase Ended in Lafitte
Jefferson Parish deputies say the suspect sped away as officers arrived and was later spotted near the intersection of Lapalco and Ames boulevards. When he refused to stop, a pursuit continued and ended in Lafitte, where he was taken into custody, according to WBRZ. Deputies allege a firearm was recovered along the route of the chase and that the suspect had opened his vehicle's trunk after the shooting before abandoning the car and running.
Charges, Court Status and Family
The defendant faces second-degree murder, obstruction of justice and aggravated flight from an officer. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center, according to reporting. Deputy Shaquille O'Neal Guerin is survived by his wife and three children and had served eight years with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office, according to his obituary in The Times-Picayune Obituaries.
