A Sunday night inside a Miami-Dade County home ended in a hospital run when an 8-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the ankle, authorities said. She was taken to a pediatric hospital for treatment while detectives sort out exactly what went wrong.
What deputies say
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called around 8:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, to a home in the 3700 block of Southwest 87th Court. Investigators said the girl’s father accidentally dropped his gun, and it went off when it hit the ground, striking her in the ankle. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the child to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and detectives with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office General Investigations Unit opened a case, as reported by Local 10.

The General Investigations Unit of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is leading the probe. The unit is responsible for district-level investigations and follow-up work across the county, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office site.
The girl was taken to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, the region’s freestanding pediatric specialty center, which provides trauma services and pediatric emergency care.
Local pattern
This is not the first accidental shooting involving a child in Miami-Dade County in recent years. In November 2023, a 4-year-old girl died after being shot in the head by a gun inside her home, a case previously covered by Local 10. Investigators in the current incident will decide whether any criminal charges are appropriate.
