Trousdale County investigators say they have identified and questioned a juvenile after a threatening social media post aimed at Trousdale County High School, and school leaders quickly moved to tighten security on campus this week. The investigation involves sheriff's deputies and state homeland security investigators, and parents were notified while officials worked to determine whether the threat was credible.
In a Facebook update, the Trousdale County Sheriff's Department said its investigators, along with investigators from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, located and interviewed the juvenile, then notified the youth's parents and school administrators. The department also urged anyone with additional information to contact the sheriff's office. Separately, the Trousdale County School District posted an "Important Notice" saying it received a tip about potential mass violence late Tuesday, adding that school resource officers and extra security measures would be in place at Trousdale County High School.
Investigators' account
According to the Trousdale County Sheriff's Department, investigators "identified and interviewed the juvenile that made the threatening social media post" and then informed the juvenile's parents and school officials. The post described the case as an active investigation and did not say whether any charges have been filed.
Legal context in Tennessee
Tennessee law makes it a crime to issue threats of mass violence aimed at schools and requires anyone who knows about such a threat to report it to both law enforcement and school officials. Under Tennessee Code § 39-16-517, threatening mass violence on school property can carry criminal penalties, and local education rules call for threat assessments when students are suspected of making valid threats. Courts may also order mental health evaluations as part of pretrial supervision or case disposition under Tennessee Code § 49-6-3401.
School response and safety measures
The district's "Important Notice" said school resource officers would be on campus and that additional security measures would be put in place to protect students and staff, according to the Trousdale County School District. The notice listed the district office phone number for parents with questions and stressed that normal school operations would continue, just with heightened precautions.
How to report tips
Officials asked anyone with information related to the threat to call the Trousdale County Sheriff's Office nonemergency line at (615) 374-2114, or 911 in an emergency. The county's official website lists that nonemergency number and the sheriff's office address, and the agency is overseeing the active investigation, according to Trousdale County Government.
Authorities have not released the juvenile's age or any additional details about the social media post beyond what was shared on Facebook and in the district's notice. The investigation remains active, and officials say further updates will come through official channels as they are available.
